“I'm behind on credits.”
You're not the first, and you're not out of time. At Uplift, your grade level is determined by credits earned, so there's no waiting on a cohort to catch up to you. Students can take on additional coursework, use our Test-Out option to earn credit by demonstrating what they already know, and work year-round toward graduation.
“I want to move faster.”
If you're ready for more, you shouldn't have to wait. Students who earn credits faster advance ahead of their peers — some graduate a full year early. Add AP coursework, take college classes through dual enrollment, or test out of material you've already mastered.
“School stopped feeling safe.”
Some students come to us because the building stopped working — the anxiety, the social pressure, the days that ended in tears. Uplift is a small, supervised, bully-free environment where teachers know students by name and notice when something's off. A lot of families tell us the change happened faster than they expected.
“My schedule doesn't fit a school day.”
Training schedules, rehearsals, a job, a medical condition, a family that travels. Coursework is available around the clock, live sessions are scheduled and recorded, and your advisor works with you when life shifts. You don't have to choose between the thing you're serious about and finishing high school.

Uplift isn't independent study. You'll have live class sessions with Michigan-certified teachers on a set schedule, real due dates, and an advisor who checks in weekly. What's flexible is everything around that: when you do your independent work, where you do it, and how fast you move through material you already understand.

How grade level works here
Your credits determine your grade level. Not your age, not your cohort.
In most high schools, you move up a grade because a year went by. At Uplift, you move up because you earned the credits. That cuts both ways, and both are good news: students who are behind can catch up without repeating a full year with a class of strangers, and students who are ahead can keep going.

10th Grade
5–10.99 credits
11th Grade
11–16.99 credits

1 English, 1 Math, 1 Science, 1 Social Studies, and 2 electives.
Ways to earn credit faster
- — Test-Out: score 78% or higher on a proctored exam to earn credit without taking the full course
- — Dual enrollment: earn high school and college credit from the same class
- — AP coursework: college-level rigor, with potential college credit from the exam
- — Transfer credit: credits earned at your previous school come with you

Advanced Coursework
Finish high school with college credit already on the transcript.
Uplift students take Advanced Placement courses and enroll in college classes through partnerships with community colleges across Michigan. Dual enrollment is open primarily to juniors and seniors: earn a C or higher and the credit applies to both your high school graduation requirements and your college transcript. Classes are available in person or virtually.
Uplift is a tuition-free Michigan public school. Your transcript, GPA, and diploma are the same credentials any Michigan public high school issues, and our counselors support students through college applications, financial aid, and post-secondary planning.
You won't be doing this alone
Every student has an advisor who knows their name and their plan.
Students in grade 10 are assigned an advisor who typically stays with them through graduation, with weekly check-ins. Counselors lead grade-level meetings on social-emotional learning, college and career readiness, and career exploration, and run monthly workshops for all high schoolers: career prep webinars, résumé building, mock interviews, SAT prep, and college visits.
Every student maintains an Educational Development Plan — a living document that maps coursework to what comes after graduation, built with a counselor and updated as plans change.

This is the part families are most surprised by. Uplift students join weekly clubs, take in-person and virtual field trips, travel internationally, attend prom, and walk at an in-person graduation ceremony. Next Step Online is Uplift's alternative education program for high school students and adult learners under 22 who are significantly credit-deficient — an accelerated, supported path to a high school diploma with staff dedicated specifically to the program.
